450 SL

1976

In 2018, a rare and unique Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster was sold at the Artcurial’s biennial Le Mans Classic auctions. It was sold at a astonishing price of €3,143,400. The unique thing about the 300SL, was that it was only driven 1,372km and then put in a garage and left "forgotten". The car in question was bought new by the dentist Gunnar Giermark on May the 31th 1963 from Philipsons Automobil AB in Stockholm, Sweden. In his car collections, Gunnar also had: a Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud that he bought from Prince Bertil, as well as a fine example of a Mercedes Benz 450 SL from 1976.

The Mercedes Benz 350 SL was presented in Geneva in April 1971. It was designed at a time when stricter safety requirements from the American authorities were expected to kill the open car. But the Mercedes designers built such a powerful wagon that it passed the legal requirements. The car was internally called "Der Panzerwagen" because of the heavy construction. The downside was the high weight and therefore required a V8 engine to achieve the performance of the predecessor 280 SL. In March 1973, the USA engine was introduced to the European market with the model designation: 450 SL. The reason was increased exhaust gas purification requirements here as well, and Mercedes engines were among those that lost the most power when they were equipped with the purification technology of the time.

Written in the Mercedes-Benz sales brochure before the Swedish sales launch of the 450 SL:
This is perhaps the most exclusive of all 1976 Mercedes models. Exclusively because the item is built for two. But if that space is enough for you, then you have a car here, which can give you joy and greater benefit than perhaps any other. A roadster. An open car for pleasant days and warm evenings, with a sunroof against the summer rain and with a hardtop for winter days. A car with all the safety and comfort that Mercedes can offer (including a large trunk), and with Mercedes' powerful V8 engine under the hood. This is how a sports car should be – lightning fast acceleration and safe road holding for safe adaptation to every traffic situation.
Mercedes power steering and Mercedes automatic transmission with torque converter make driving the playfully easy pleasure it should be. In a roadster – a sports car built for two.

We can now present a really nice example of the Mercedes-Benz 450SL from 1976. Painted in Silver metallic and decorated with black leather upholstery. The car was sold new by Philipsons Norr Bil AB in Stockholm, Sweden. On the 7th of July 1976 to Mrs. Jana Jalinkowa.
In August 1980, the car was sold to Mrs. Elsa Giermark, mother of Gunnar Giermark. In October 1981, a change of ownership was carried out and the car was then signed over to Gunnar Giermark himself. This car thus became another Mercedes-Benz to qualify for Gunnar's unique Mercedes collection, together with his 300SL Roadster and 300SL Gullwing. Gunnar owned and used this 450SL sparingly for just over 30 years, until his death in 2011. In 2014, the car was sold, as part of Gunnar Giermark's estate.
Between 1998 and 2022, the car has only been driven approx. 20,000 km and now boasts an odometer reading of a paltry 46.000 km. The car is in fantastically good condition and repainted once under Gunnar Giermark's ownership. This 450 SL runs incredibly well and the seats hold firm to be compared to brand new condition. The car comes with a lot of documentation and memorial notes written by Gunnar himself. Don't miss the chance to become the owner of a unique Swedish-sold Mercedes-Benz 450 SL, with low miles and exciting provenance.
